ARTIST STATEMENTS
Artists Statements:
Points to consider
writing about:
The subject matter in
your photograph.
The concepts in the
work.
The techniques of
making the work.
References to
artists/books/or any inspiration for the work.
It is generally a good
idea to have some physical description of the work: The work consists
of photographs, all the pictures are blue because…etc.
It is also important to
explain how the medium or techniques in the work correlate to the
concepts in the work.
Another important
question to consider is: Why are you making this work? What is
important about it for you, or for you to share with others?
Consider what you want
to reveal to your viewer, and what you want to hide. How much
information is too much?
REMEMBER: For Personal Project 3 your statement will hang next to your work, it can be between 5-250 words. The statement should be specifically about the work you did for this project, not about yourself as an artist - that could be another statement for a website, or something else.
Here are some links for inspiration, but make sure you keep your statements as true to yourself & your work as possible!

Good example of a clear, honest artist statement. This statement is focused on the photographer as an artist, not a specific project.

Look under different

process of image making, and descriptions of physical work.

Good example of the
difference between an artist statement and reviews written about
one’s work from another person.

most work has a statement before you view the images.

GRADUATE STUDIO REVIEWS!
I forgot to announce that the Graduate Studio reviews are THIS THURSDAY - before our class on Thursday (Friday, the 4th).
I have not yet seen the schedule, but they normally start at 9am and end about 3pm.
The Graduate Studio Reviews are the 1st year graduate students, working in all different disciplines (photo, sculpture, painting, etc), presenting a body of work to 4 Art & Art History professors. These reviews are open to the public, and anyone can come in the studio buildings, stay and listen to an entire review - or bounce around and look at different art works & listen to different reviews.
The reviews are 1 hour conversations between the artist and the 4 member panel. At the end, the conversation opens up to the public and you can add your comments/questions if you're so inclined.
This is a REALLY valuable experience to witness, particularly if you are interested in continuing your art education.
These reviews are held on UNM Campus, in the Annex and Mattox graduate studio buildings. I'm attaching a map, and have circled where these buildings are!
GO!! If you write a 1 page response about one of the reviews, I'll give you a nice chunk of extra credit in the class.
I'll forward you the schedule as soon as I get one.

GROUPS
At the end of class we pulled names out of a hat to divide the class into two groups for our future class critiques - you'll be in this group until the end of the semester. It was a class decision that all students not present, automatically went into the group presenting on Tues (sorry).
Each group will need to come up with a name. Each name needs to start with your group letter - The Alphabets, Astroids, Apples
Or
The Bats, Bubble Monsters, etc. Up to you to decide. :)
GROUP A will present Personal Project 1 on 3/5 and GROUP B on 3/7. For the next critiques the groups will flip-flop.
GROUP A:
Michelle
Si Qin
Cory
Justin
Keith
Chris
Bao
Lilly
GROUP B:
Roland
Andre
Antonio
Nick
Monique
Nichole
Bradford

Public Talk: Geoffrey Batchen
Public Talk: Geoffrey Batchen
University of New Mexico/Room 102 in the new SMLC-Science & Math Learning Center building, just west of the Clark Hall Chemistry Dept.
Geoffrey Batchen, Beaumont Newhall Visiting Professor of Photography
‘Repetition and Difference: The Dissemination of Photography,’
Sponsored by the UNM Department of Art and Art History with in-kind support from the University of New Mexico Art Museum.
Geoffrey Batchen’s work as a teacher, writer and curator focuses on the history of photography with a particular interest in the way that photography mediates aspects of modern life. This makes photography an especially challenging phenomenon to study and much of his work addresses the methodological task that this study poses for art history. In addition to his expertise in the general theory and historiography of photography, Batchen helped pioneer the study of vernacular photography.
Some of his important publications include: Burning with Desire: The Conception of Photography (1997), Each Wild Idea: Writing, Photography, History (2001), Forget Me Not: Photography and Remembrance (2004), William Henry Fox Talbot (2008), and Suspending Time: Life, Photography, Death (2010) and he co-edited Picturing Atrocity: Photography in Crisis (2012). He has also curated exhibitions for museums throughout Europe, North America, Japan, Brazil and Australia. Batchen has taught at the University of California, San Diego, the University of New Mexico, the Graduate Center in New York and currently he is Professor of Art History at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.
Talk is free and open to the public
